The author tells her personal story of making the decision to home-school. She relates the steps of her decision and offers a number of personal examples of the practical aspects of what home-schooling entails. Interspersed throughout the book are short sections written by her children as to their perceived benefits of a home-school education. Other sections provide practical help and advice on supplies, resources, and activities that complete a home-school environment.
As the author's nephew Brian said in his 2000 review, this is NOT a how-to manual on how to homeschool "all the way through high school" as the title suggests. It is unfortunate the book is not titled, instead, something like "A Very General Memoir About How Our Family Viewed Our Lives As Homeschoolers," which would be a far more accurate description of its contents.I saw almost nothing in this book that will help a parent who is already homeschooling yet has questions about homeschooling high school classes for a college-bound child. There is the suggestion that getting is a GED is a great way to obtain a form of graduation certificate (duh, no brainer) -- but the author's children didn't even take the SAT, so that will tell you something right there. Just saying . . .
